We are becoming a lab equipment business
We started out buying computers. The bench is now full of chromatography, ultrasonics, and an atomic force microscope. Here is why that happened.
When we started, the plan was computers. Refurbished business machines, networking gear, the reliable volume trade. We still do that and we are not stopping.
But look at what is actually on the bench right now: an atomic force microscope, a stack of Agilent chromatography modules, a texture analyser, an ultrasonic processor, syringe pumps, an eight and a half digit multimeter that costs more than a car.
That was not the plan. It is what the market kept handing us, and at some point you have to notice.
Why lab equipment keeps winning
It comes down to one thing: the gap between what a seller knows and what a buyer needs is enormous, and it is enormous in a way that does not close.
With a used ThinkPad, everyone knows what it is. The seller knows, the buyer knows, and twenty other resellers know. The price is efficient because the knowledge is evenly spread. You make money on volume and on doing the refurb properly, and that is a real business, but there is no gap to stand in.
With a chromatography pump, almost nobody in the room knows what it is. It arrives at auction described as “lab equipment, misc” by staff who have never used one, and it is bid on by people who see an unfamiliar word and move on. Meanwhile there is a lab three states away who needs exactly that module and will pay properly for it, and who would never in a thousand years think to look at a county surplus auction.
Standing between those two is the whole job. The gap does not close, because closing it requires knowing what the instruments are, and that knowledge is expensive to acquire and boring to acquire, which is precisely why so few people have it.
What we have learned so far
The software matters more than the hardware. The single biggest discount in this market is not condition, it is a missing licence path. Solve that and an instrument goes from scrap to real money. We wrote that up in the software gate.
Seller fault descriptions are frequently wrong. They are written in good faith by people who have never operated the instrument, and a symptom they describe is often the test conditions rather than the equipment. The pump the seller said was broken is the clearest example we have.
Honesty about what you did not test is a feature. Lab buyers are technical. They can tell the difference between “tested” and “powers on,” and they will trust a seller who draws that line themselves far more than one who blurs it. Saying “we ran water through it and did not verify pressure hold” has never once cost us a serious buyer.
The channel is not eBay. For the high value instruments, the buyers are on LabX and the used lab marketplaces, and they are patient. This is not a fast business. An instrument can sit for months and then sell to exactly the right person at exactly the right price.
What this means for you
