The pump the seller said was broken
A lot was discounted because a pump "does not stay powered on." We could not reproduce the fault. Here is why that happens more often than you think.
One of the Agilent 1200 binary pumps we bought came with a warning in the listing. The seller said it did not stay powered on.
That is a serious fault. A pump that will not stay up is, for most buyers, scrap. The listing was priced accordingly, which is the only reason it was affordable.
We put it on the bench. It powers on. It stays on. We could not reproduce the fault at all.
What is probably going on
I want to be careful here, because “the seller was wrong” is a smug conclusion and it is not always the right one. The fault may be real and intermittent, and we may simply not have hit the conditions that trigger it. That possibility is priced into how we are selling it, and I will come back to that.
But there is a much more common explanation, and it is worth understanding if you buy surplus.
The person who wrote that listing was not a chromatographer. They were most likely facilities or surplus staff working through a room of equipment they had never used, with a deadline. They plugged it in, something did not look right, and they wrote down what they saw.
On an Agilent stack, “does not stay powered on” is a very easy thing to see when nothing is wrong. The modules in a stack are linked by a controller cable, and they expect to come up as a system. Power up one module on its own, out of its stack, without the controller talking to it, and the behaviour can look like a fault to somebody who does not know what a healthy module looks like on its own. Add a tired power switch, a questionable bench outlet, or simply the module going into standby, and you have your listing note.
The fault was, most likely, in the test conditions.
Why this is the whole business in one lot
This is the clearest example I have of where the money in surplus actually comes from.
The gap is not that we are cleverer bidders. The gap is that the seller is describing equipment they do not understand, in good faith, and their description becomes the price. An honest “I could not get this to work” from someone who has never operated the instrument is indistinguishable, in a listing, from a genuine hardware fault.
Everybody bidding reads the same two lines. Almost everybody takes them at face value, because the alternative is to gamble that the seller was wrong. We take that gamble when we think we can explain the described symptom with something other than a broken instrument.
Sometimes we are wrong and we have bought a broken pump. That is the risk, and it is why the discount exists. This time we were not.
What we are actually claiming
Here is precisely what we tested, and what we did not:

We do not have a calibrated HPLC test rig, so we cannot qualify a pump to spec, and we are not going to imply that we can. What we can say is that the specific fault the seller described does not appear, that it runs, and that it moves fluid without leaking.
It is listed as exactly that. A buyer with a real chromatography bench can qualify it properly in an afternoon, and they are the person who should own it.
The lesson for anyone buying surplus
Read the seller’s fault description and ask one question: could a person who has never used this instrument have produced that symptom by testing it wrong?
If the answer is plausibly yes, you are looking at a discount that may not correspond to any real damage. That is where the value is.
If the answer is no, believe them, and bid like it is broken. Because it probably is.
